U.S. Air Forces Southern stated the mission on November 24 was part of efforts to “bring Hemispheric security & stability,” integrating with U.S. fighter jets and training for rapid mobility.
This operation falls under a broader military presence in the Caribbean, as Washington increases pressure on transnational criminal networks operating near its borders.
General Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, visited U.S. troops in Puerto Rico and personnel aboard a Navy warship deployed in the area. This marks his second trip since the military buildup began.
The Associated Press reported that an unusually large formation of U.S. warships and aviation units, including an advanced aircraft carrier, is operating in the Caribbean, conducting interdiction strikes on suspected drug-smuggling boats. Operation Southern Spear, which involves naval, air, and Marine Corps assets, aims to disrupt drug-smuggling routes and enhance coordination with regional partners. The B-52H participation underscores the operation’s long-range strike capability.
Air Forces Southern emphasized that the mission demonstrated the U.S. capability to “integrate with fighter jets & train on rapid mobility,” aligning with current Pentagon priorities for speed, joint operations, and regional presence.
The B-52H bomber, a Boeing-manufactured aircraft operated by the U.S. Air Force, has been a key component of strategic deterrence for decades due to its large strike payload capacity and extended airborne endurance.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who visited Puerto Rico with General Caine earlier in September, stated that deployed Marines were “on the front lines of defending the American homeland.”
